Barb Belcourt is a First Nations Cree and is a very proud member of the Peace Wapiti School District #76 Sâkâstew First Nations Metis and Inuit Liaison Program. This program was implemented to provide Indigenous students an understanding environment to enhance their education. Mrs. Belcourt grew up and still resides in Kelly Lake, a small community in British Columbia (population 80). She has been working at Hythe Regional School for 14 years. Her most challenging but also most fulfilling assignment at HRS is teaching the Gr 4-9 Cree program. In 2006 Peace Wapiti School District made it mandatory for all Gr 4-9 students to take French as a second language. HRS has a high population of Indigenous students with a Cree background which made the board consider to offer the students a choice of taking French or Cree as their second language. The excitement was almost overwhelming when she was offered the position of Cree Instructor to teach the Gr 4-6 program and equally honoured when asked to teach the Grade 7-9 program in 2014. Even though she has a strong Cree background, not only has she taught the students a new language but has learned a lot in the process. Her passion in teaching the Cree language is extremely evident when she talks about the Cree program. Barb has attended many conferences and workshops over the years to enhance her learning to implement what she learned into her classroom and is always willing to share her knowledge of the Cree language and Culture. .Additionally, Mrs. Belcourt is experienced and confident in the delivery of the Blanket exercise within schools as a means of sharing Indigenous history and culture. |
